Japanese citrus beverages: a category of fruit-juice beverages made from citrus fruits, including grapefruit, orange, lemon, mandarin, Kawachi bankan, and hassaku, distributed in Japan's beverage market. Mass-distributed products coexist with differentiated brands sold directly by producers, and official product descriptions vary markedly by brand in whether they treat bitterness as a positive quality, something to suppress, a neutral feature, or do not mention it.
Reading the bitterness
Pokka Sapporo's 「キレートレモン」 (Kireto Lemon) explains on its official site that it uses lemon peel extract to convey all the value of the lemon, including the bitterness of its peel. Ito Farm (「伊藤農園」, Itō Nōen), a producer in Arida, Wakayama Prefecture, introduces Kawachi bankan as a fruit also called 「和製グレープフルーツ」 (in translation: "Japanese grapefruit") and having 「さっぱりとしたほろ苦さ」 (in translation: "a refreshing, mild bitterness"); it also describes hassaku with 「ほろ苦さがクセになる」 (in translation: "its mild bitterness grows on you"). Muchachaen (「無茶々園」), a producers' group in Seiyo, Ehime Prefecture, uses a common description of amanatsu, 「伊予柑」 (iyokan), hassaku, and Kawachi bankan juices in which sweetness, acidity, and aroma have 「ほろ苦さ」 (in translation: "mild bitterness"); for hassaku juice it further stresses 「独特の苦みこそが八朔らしさ」 (in translation: "its distinctive bitterness is precisely what makes it hassaku"). JA Kumamoto Kajitsuren (「JA熊本果実連」) describes its Kawachi bankan juice as having 「程よい酸味のきいたほろ苦さ」 (in translation: "mild bitterness accented by moderate acidity").
By contrast, some mass-distributed orange beverages and descriptions of juicing methods treat bitterness as something to suppress. Suntory's 「なっちゃんオレンジ」 (Natchan Orange) says in its product information that it combines the fruit’s inherent juice character with 「酸味や苦味を抑えた飲みやすさ」 (in translation: "easy drinkability with acidity and bitterness toned down"). For 「温州しぼり」 (in translation: "Unshū Shibori, Squeezed Unshū Mandarin"), which Kagome sells seasonally on its own online shopping site, its explanation of the juicing method says it uses 「インライン搾汁」 (in translation: "in-line juicing"), pressing only the pulp, 「果皮の苦味や渋みが混ざらないように」 (in translation: "so that bitterness and astringency from the peel do not mix in").
Official descriptions of Morinaga Milk Industry's Sunkist 「100%オレンジ」 (100% Orange), 「100%グレープフルーツブレンド」 (100% Grapefruit Blend), and 「100%オレンジブレンド」 (100% Orange Blend); Kirin's 「トロピカーナ100%まるごと果実感グレープフルーツ」 (Tropicana 100% Marugoto Kajitsukan Grapefruit); Suntory's 「C.C.レモン」 (C.C. Lemon); Asahi Soft Drinks' 「三ツ矢特濃ピンクグレープフルーツスカッシュ」 (Mitsuya Tokunō Pink Grapefruit Squash); Megmilk Snow Brand's 「Doleグレープフルーツミックス100%」 (Dole Grapefruit Mix 100%); Ehime Beverage's 「POMポンジュース」 (POM Pon Juice); and the Umajimura Agricultural Cooperative in Kochi Prefecture's 「ごっくん馬路村」 (Gokkun Umajimura) and 「ゆずしぼり」 (Yuzu Shibori) use no terms for bitterness. Instead, they center the balance of acidity and sweetness, fruit character, or pleasing aroma. At Ito Farm, too, in contrast to Kawachi bankan and hassaku, descriptions of 「温州みかん」 (Unshū mikan), natsumikan, 「いよかん」 (iyokan), and 「三宝柑」 (sanbōkan) contain no bitterness terms.
Even among juices made from the same cultivar, Kawachi bankan, bitterness is not treated uniformly. Ehime's Muchachaen says 「その後感じる心地よい苦みがさっぱりとした余韻を残し」 (in translation: "the pleasant bitterness felt afterward leaves a refreshing finish"); Wakayama's Ito Farm says 「さっぱりとしたほろ苦さ」 (in translation: "a refreshing, mild bitterness"); and Kumamoto's JA Kumamoto Kajitsuren says 「程よい酸味のきいたほろ苦さ」 (in translation: "mild bitterness accented by moderate acidity"). Thus these producer-direct sellers all speak of bitterness as a positive quality. On the other hand, although it is not Kawachi bankan, Suntory's Natchan Orange says 「酸味や苦味を抑えた」 (in translation: "with acidity and bitterness toned down"), while Kagome's Unshū Shibori treats bitterness as something to exclude in its explanation of the juicing method. The treatment of bitterness therefore cannot be explained simply by the scale of distribution.

Japanese citrus beverages is documented as having Regarding juice of the single cultivar kawachi bankan, the direct-from-producer sellers Muchachaen, Itonoen, and the JA Kumamoto Fruit Growers' Association Federation all describe bitterness as a value word — 『心地よい苦み』 (in translation: "a pleasant bitterness"), 『ほろ苦さ』 (in translation: "a gentle bitterness"), 『大人の味』 (in translation: "a grown-up flavor") — and this direction agrees with the wording of Morinaga Milk Industry's mass-market Sunkist 『濃いグレープフルーツ』 (in translation: "Rich Grapefruit"), described as having 『ほのかな苦み』 (in translation: "a faint bitterness"). On the other hand, even on the same mass-market side, Suntory Natchan describes bitterness as something 『抑えた』 (in translation: "held down"), and Kagome's limited-edition 「温州しぼり」 (in translation: "Unshu Shibori") also treats bitterness as something to be excluded, in its explanation of the pressing method.observation
Scope: Official sites of Muchachaen, Itonoen, JA Kumamoto Fruit Growers' Association Federation, Morinaga Milk Industry, Suntory, and Kagome (accessed 2026-09-04; Morinaga Milk Industry only, 2026-09-03)
Note: Verification of the H10 reformulation: what separates bitterness as a value word from bitterness as something to be suppressed is not the dichotomy of 『大量流通/差別化』 (in translation: "mass-market vs. differentiated"), since even within the single cultivar kawachi bankan there are examples on both the mass-market and differentiated sides that treat bitterness as a value word, and conversely the mass-market side itself contains both suppressive and affirmative wording. Rather than defend the hypothesis, only the observation itself is recorded.
Verbatim: 『その後感じる心地よい苦みがさっぱりとした余韻を残し』 (in translation: "the pleasant bitterness felt afterward leaves a refreshing finish") (differentiated; kawachi bankan).
Verbatim: 『和製グレープフルーツとも呼ばれる、さっぱりとしたほろ苦さ。』 (in translation: "a refreshing, gently bitter flavor, also called a Japanese-made grapefruit.") (differentiated; kawachi bankan).
Verbatim: 『程よい酸味のきいたほろ苦さは、まさに"大人の味"。』 (in translation: "a gentle bitterness with just the right tartness — truly a 'grown-up flavor.'") (differentiated; kawachi bankan).
Contradicts: Verbatim: 『酸味や苦味を抑えた飲みやすさを両立しました。』 (in translation: "we achieved easy drinkability by holding down sourness and bitterness.") (mass-market; orange type; suppressive wording).
Limitations: The cultivar is an orange type, different from grapefruit or kawachi bankan.
Contradicts: Verbatim: 『果皮の苦味や渋みが混ざらないように...インライン搾汁』 (in translation: "...in-line pressing, so that the bitterness and astringency of the peel do not mix in...") (a limited-edition product from a mass-market maker; suppressive wording).
