Reading the bitterness

The 2026 EU geographical-indication registration application for Cicoria puntarelle molfettese PGI lists Molfetta, Catalogna pugliese, and Catalogna puntarelle a foglia stretta as the varieties covered. Catalogna pugliese itself is one of the source varieties and is not equated with the geographical-indication name Cicoria puntarelle molfettese.

The Apulia PAT record 『Fave novelle e cicorie』 states that fresh fava beans may be cooked together with Catalonian chicory (catalogna) or wild chicory. However, this description uses 『catalogna』 as a common name and does not guarantee that it is identical to the specific ecotype Catalogna pugliese (this entry) in the EU registration application.
