Reading the bitterness

The official history of the Chartreuse liqueur manufacturer records that in 1737 the manuscript was moved to the Grande Chartreuse monastery, where Brothers André and Bruno set to work realizing it. This is an origin story presented by the manufacturer, not an official historical record of the monastic order itself.

The monastic order's own official website, meanwhile, names income from the production of Chartreuse liqueur as one source of funding for a system by which financially better-off monasteries support poorer ones. This page explains that support system; it does not describe the liqueur's preparation method, ingredients, or bitterness.

Scope: The same site's account: it states that in 1737 the manuscript was moved to the Grande Chartreuse monastery, where Brothers André and Bruno set to work realizing it.

The French text states that in 1737 Dom Michel Brunier Lafarge, prior of the Chartreuse and general of the Order, ordered the manuscript transferred to the monastery of the Grande Chartreuse, and that Brothers André and Bruno were then tasked with putting it into practice and finding the most perfect elixir.

Ordre des Chartreux (Carthusian order) — cultural role: Chartreuse (liqueur)supported

Scope: The chartreux.org "Présentation rapide" page (the Carthusian Order's own official website; content as posted as of September 2026)

Note: A primary source (the monastic order's own official website). This page does not touch at all on the liqueur's preparation method or origin story (such as the 1605 manuscript), mentioning it only in its economic role.

The French text describes a system within the Order that allows better-resourced religious houses to support the poorest ones, made possible in particular by income from producing Chartreuse liqueur.
Limitations: Apart from this one sentence, there is no mention of the liqueur, and no description of its preparation method, ingredients, or origin story.

Context: The words "amer" and "amertume" do not appear even once anywhere in the full text of the page. Nor is there any mention of the origin story of the 1605 manuscript and its compounding by the monks (the content told by the Chartreuse Diffusion company's site). The monastic order's own official website speaks of neither the liqueur's origin nor its bitterness.
Limitations: Other pages within the site (such as sub-pages for moines/moniales) have not been examined in detail.
